The invention relates to a composite material characterised in that it comprises a skeleton consisting of single fibres and/or fabric made from the aforementioned fibres, said skeleton being embedded in a silica matrix. The invention also relates to the production method and surface treatment thereof, the composite materials that can be obtained by means of said treatment, articles comprising said composite materials and the use thereof to produce optical instrument structures, mirrors, thin- or thick-layered hybrid electronic circuits, passive and active antennae, ultrastable radiofrequency cavities, solar panels, telescope or focal plane structures, laser systems, heaters or sensors which are preferably electronic.
