A method for the acquisition of data for an electric welder and the welds obtained comprises:- measuring the instantaneous alternating voltage at the primary (19) and secondary (16) terminals of the welding transformer and between the jaws (18) of the welding jaws; measuring the instantaneous current in the primary (24) and secondary (17) of the transformer; measuring the instantaneous displacement of the mobile jaw (4); memorising these values during the welding operation; calculating the energy provided by the primary and secondary to the jaws (5,6) as a function of time; calculating the energy provided by the secondary to the jaws and the calorific energy dissipated by the sparking as a function of the displacement of the mobile jaws; calculating the energy yields and on the basis of these measurements and calculations, establishing automatically a dynamic diagnosis in real time, with or without interactive intervention by an operator, for the quality of the weld being produced. Independent claims are included for the following: (a) a device for putting this method into service; (b) a direct flash electric welding machine; (c) and utilisation of such a welding machine for butt welding steel strip in a continuous process.
