Apparatus and method for advancing a receiving member for an aligned in accurately fitting relationship with an image bearing member. A motor (M 1) is provided which is responsive to motor drive pulses (216). A drive member (102) engages in the receiving element, and a drive coupling (108.114) connecting the drive member (102) and the motor (M 1) together. An encoder (200) generates encoder pulses (206) corresponding to the movement of the image bearing member.
