Apparatus and method for advancing a receiving member for an aligned in accurately fitting relationship with an image bearing member. A motor (M 1) is provided which is responsive to motor drive pulses (216). A drive member (102) engages in the receiving element, and a drive coupling (108.114) connecting the drive member (102) and the motor (M 1) together. An encoder (200) generates encoder pulses (206) corresponding to the movement of the image bearing member. A pulse generator (214) generates motor driving pulses (216) on the basis of encoder pulses (206) in order to accelerate the receiver member to a speed which is approximately equal to the image transport speed (220). A timer mechanism (302) delays the acceleration of the receiving element to the image transport speed (220) by the duration of the delay time, which is the relationship expressed by the number of Cordiererimpulse period of time between detecting the leading edge of the receiving element and the next motor driving pulse for braking the motor.
