PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for automatically identifying a video input clock of an HDTV video coder are provided to generate a reference clock in the video coder, and to compare the reference clock with a video clock to automatically set PLL according to the compared result, thereby creating a system clock without regard to the kind of the input video clock. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for automatically identifying a video input clock of an HDTV video coder includes a reference clock generator(400) for generating a reference clock for determining the mode of an input video clock, and a mode determining unit(300) for comparing the input video clock with the reference clock to determine the mode of the input video clock. The apparatus further has a PLL control signal generator(200) for generating a PLL control signal according to the determined mode, and a PLL(100) synchronized with the input video clock according to the PLL control signal to generate a system clock.
