PURPOSE: A method of coding information is provided to record the same amount of information in less space and to increase information density. CONSTITUTION: Provided are a method and apparatus for coding information having improved information density. Further provided are the method of producing a modulated signal from the coded information and producing a recording medium from the coded information, and the recording medium itself. A method of coding information comprises the steps of receiving m-bit(m is integer) information word and converting the m-bits information word into n-bit(n is more integer than m) code word wherein the n-bit code word is divided into three types and a coding state of three kinds and a code word set corresponding to each different coding state does not includes the identical code word. If the former m-bit information word is converted into the first type n-bit code word, one m-bit information word is converted into the first type, the second type, or third type n-bit code word. Then if the former m-bit information word is converted into the second type n-bit code word, one m-bit information word is converted into the first type or third type n-bit code word. If the former m-bit information word is converted into the third type n-bit code word, one m-bit information word is converted into the first type code word.
