PURPOSE: A running machine and a method for controlling the speed and the position of an exerciser on the running machine are provided to grasp the position of the exerciser, thus to automatically control the speed of the running machine according to the will of the exerciser. CONSTITUTION: The running machine comprises plural optical sensors arranged on the left and the right according to the advance direction of a traveling belt. The optical sensor consists of a light emitting part(S1a,S2a,S3a,Ska,S16a) disposed on the one side of the traveling belt, and a light receiving part(S1b,S2b,S3b,Skb,S16b) disposed on the opposite side of the light emitting part. Additionally, the running machine is provided with a controller for calculating the center position of the exerciser from the location of the optical sensor intercepted by the legs of the exerciser.
