Method for controlling an internal combustion engine in the region of the lean limit

The regulation method provides a required air/fuel ratio close to a given weak (lean) fuel mixture combustion limit, with monitoring of the combustion characteristics within the individual engine cylinders, to allow correction of the weak (lean) fuel mixture combustion limit via a correction value. A minimal selection stage may be used to select the lesser value between the weak (lean) fuel mixture combustion limit and the required lambda value as the effective value for regulation of the air/fuel ratio.
