The method for measuring magnetic stray fields is carried out using a magnetic sensor layer (2) at arranged at a selected distance to the recording/reading head to be measured. The optically perceivable alterations effected at the sensor layer, based on the penetration of the magnetic stray field of the recording/reading head (1), are detected by a high resolution optical phase microscope (5), to determine the measurement values. The system for carrying out the method includes a magnetic sensor layer (2) and a high resolution optical phase microscope (5).
