The well (10) has a filter tube (16) with vertical gravel bed (38). Pneumatic pressure waves are introduced into the area of the filter tube and into the gravel bed from outside, at set or selected time intervals. The pressure waves are generated by the use of carbon dioxide. The appliance has a pressure vessel (24) connected via a controlled valve (26) to a feed tube (28), which is placed in the ground (12) outside the filter tube. The tube is connected to pneumatic discharge nozzles (30) for the pressure waves located in a ring around the filter tube. The valve is connected to a timer (34).
