Side-chain alkylation of alkylbenzene with mono-olefin, e.g. for production of isobutyl-benzene from toluene, involves using a catalyst comprising alkali metal on a mixture of potassium carbonate and sodium or potassium chloride
A mixture of potassium carbonate with sodium and/or potassium chloride is used as inorganic catalyst support in a process for the alkali metal-catalysed side-chain alkylation of alkylbenzenes (I). A mixture of potassium carbonate (KC) with sodium and/or potassium chloride (A-Cl) is used as inorganic catalyst support in a process for the alkali metal-catalysed side-chain alkylation of alkylbenzenes (I) containing at least one alkyl side-chain with an alpha -hydrogen atom by reacting (I) with a mono-olefin. Independent claims are also included for: (a) a method for the production of a catalyst for this process by mixing molten alkali metal with the powdered support material at above the m.pt. of the alkali metal; (b) alkali metal catalyst obtained by this method.
