The method involves using polarization control elements with individual delays that convert the polarization of an optical signal into its orthogonal. The elements form a polarization transformer with an overall phase angle difference and delay as an angle coordinate between the polarization and its orthogonal, in which an individual angle coordinate varies as a function of the other angle coordinate. The magnitude of the variation is limited. The method involves using several polarization control elements (SBC1,SBC2,...) with individual delays that can at least partly convert the polarization of an optical signal (OS) into its orthogonal using any individual phase angle differences as individual angle coordinates. The elements form a polarization transformer with an overall phase angle difference and delay as an angle coordinate between the polarization and its orthogonal, in which an individual angle coordinate varies as a function of the other angle coordinate. The magnitude of the variation of an individual angle coordinate for all possible sequences of desired polarization transformations is limited.
