Analyzing exogenous and endogenous cell activation comprises measuring the assembly of receptors into a CD14-containing receptor cluster (RC), is new. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) diagnosing: (i) systemic inflammation: or (ii) arteriosclerosis or inflammatory disease of coronary/cerebral arteries, or their precursors, by using the new method to determine energy transfer in monocytes; and (2) treatment of the specified conditions with compounds (I) that neutralize exogenous or endogenous proinflammatory molecules, phospholipids, complement-regulating proteins, Fc psi or scavenger receptors, integrin-associated proteins, lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-associated receptors and/or G-protein receptors.
