A process for the production of aliphatic oligocarbonate diols by reaction of aliphatic diols with dimethyl carbonate, (DMC). The reaction is optionally carried out in the presence of a catalyst and the degree of conversion is greater than 80 % (wrt DMC). The reaction comprises: (i) a multi-stage process; (ii) further reaction of the distilled DMC-methanol mixture; and (iii) concentrating of the resulting DMC in the same or following reactor charge.
