A method for grinding lenses and mirrors has the glass blank supported on a holder (2) which has rotational freedom and which is mounted on a swivel arm to press the glass blank under a shaped porous ceramic suction grip (5). The glass blank is securely clamped allowing precision edge grinding to ensure that the physical axis of the lens/mirror coincides with the optic axis. The rotating support includes a bearing and a sprung support. The rotating support grips the underside of the lens/mirror via a shaped plastic cup.
