The steering system has a steering column (3) between a steering wheel (2) and a setting device (11) used for providing a simulated steering resistance, with a torsion spring (9) incorporated in the steering column. A steering angle source (4) on the steering wheel side and a steering angle source (5) on the setting device side, the actual torque calculated from the difference between the 2 steering angles and the torsion spring constant. A control (8) monitors the function of both steering angle sources, for switching to an emergency operating mode in which the setting device is controlled via signals from a compensator device (49), using the momentary required torque values.
