A device for protecting a semiconductor unit (10) in a current switching device against short circuits comprises both dynamic (6) and static (7) limiters which temporarily limit or reduce the current. A circuit arrangement, especially for a static converter, for the controlled switching of input (2) to output (3) currents comprises a field-controlled semiconductor device (10) having a protection system (5) comprising a dynamic limiter (6) which temporarily limits currents, especially transients, by limiting potentials to the semiconductor control input and a static limiter (7) which temporarily reduces the current by similarly reducing the potential. The limiters are so controlled that the higher limiter is activated in the operation of the device.
