Bioreactor comprises: (a) an outer tube (10) fitted with a base (13), an inlet (5) and an outlet (14); (b) a concentric inner tube (2); (c) an aeration pipe (1) which produces large air bubbles and is mounted below the inner tube; and (d) a plate (8) mounted above the inner tube which slopes down towards the outlet and is perforated in the region where it overlaps the inner tube. Independent claims are included for: (a) a bioreactor system comprising two or more reactors as described above; (b) the use of the bioreactor or bioreactor system in a conventional small-scale waste water treatment plant; and (c) a method for purifying waste water using the bioreactor in which water flows into it, is aerobically treated with natural microorganisms and flows out, the flow through the reactor being controlled using the aerator.
