Method for determination of rheological properties of flowing matter in which the fluid is made to flow through a slit capillary. The capillary lies within a plane and is in the form of a circular section. Differential pressure measurements are made in a direction normal to the flow and in the flow direction. Also flow rate measurements are made. The measurements are used to determine fluid properties. The measurements enable determination of the non-linearity of the viscous fluid behavior, a characteristic deformation velocity and a normal stress difference or gradient. The normal stress difference is dependent on the deformation velocity and is used as a device independent value for characterizing the flowing matter.
