Furnace (10) comprises a process chamber (12) for the thermal treatment of a material (18) inserted into the process chamber; a burner (26) arranged in a combustion chamber (14); and a hot gas channel (16, 17) for introducing as gas mixture burned in the combustion chamber into the process chamber. An eddying effect is produced in the region of the combustion chamber so that waste gases produced in the process chamber during the thermal treatment are suctioned off from the chamber into a flame of the burner as a consequence of the eddying effect. An Independent claim is also included for a process for thermally cleaning waste gases. Preferred Features: The burner is structured so that a flame produced by the burner expands in a plane vertical to the longitudinal axis of the burner.
