A process is described for the calcining of titanium dioxide - pigments, in which a titanium dioxide hydrate at temperatures between 700 and 1300 deg c in a furnace and then annealed in a cooling drum is cooled, wherein by injecting water into the calcination furnace, on the outlet from the furnace or in the drop shaft leading to the cooling drum or in the cooling drum, the temperature of the furnace material disposed on values of 400 to 900 deg c is lowered, and wherein the temperature drop at least 100 deg c.
