The invention relates to a piston compressor, especially for rail vehicles, consisting essentially of a drive unit (2) producing a rotational movement (2), and a downstream compressor unit (1). Said compressor unit consists essentially of several pot-like cylinders (6a to 6c) which are arranged on a housing (3) of a crankshaft, and pistons (5a to 5c) allocated to said cylinders. The crankshaft (4) driven by the drive unit (2) transforms the rotational movement thereof into a linear movement by means of a connecting rod (7a to 7c) respectively in such a way that the allocated piston (5a to 5c) compresses air. The aim of the invention is to easily create an effective, dynamic mass compensation in the region of the crank mechanism in order to avoid vibrations, using as light-weight a construction as possible. In order to achieve this, at least one compensation connecting rod (7a) is provided with an additional mass. The centre of gravity S of said additional mass is arranged on the connecting rod axis (16) and is displaced in the direction of the piston-side end in relation to the remaining, lighter connecting rods (7b, 7c) which form an even number.
