A fatty acid alkyl ester mixture (A) is continuously produced by reacting fresh- used plant, animal fats and oils with a short chain aliphatic alkanol and a basic catalyst. (A) is removed in the reaction steps as upper phase and the glycerin formed is removed from the lower phase. The glycerin removed is added to the fats and oils in a pre-cleaning step as an extracting agent. A fatty acid alkyl ester mixture (A) is continuously produced by reacting fresh- used plant, animal fats and oils with a short chain aliphatic alkanol and a basic catalyst.
