Production of a heterogeneous catalyst comprises: (i) contacting the inside of a carbon nanotube with a fluid containing a metal catalytic compound (or precursor); and (ii) separating the nanotube from the fluid and treating it under reductive conditions such that the carbon structure is etched away in places.
