Production of a cast iron material comprises forming a melt containing 1.5-3.5 % carbon, 1.0-5.0 % silicon, 0.1-18 % manganese, less than 0.5 % phosphorus, less than 0.05 % sulfur, 0.5-5 % chromium, 1.0-20 % nickel and not more than 8.0 % copper; producing a blank with a white cast structure by adding not more than 0.5 % NiMg, NiSiMg, FeMg and/or FeSiMg so that the amounts of nickel and/or silicon given for the melt are not exceeded; and holding the blank at elevated temperature until the residual carbide content is not more than 30 %.
