The drive and braking unit has an IC engine (24) coupled to a switched drive transmission (1), a hydrodynamic brake (7) and at least one mechanical brake (13). The hydrodynamic brake acts as a primary retarder for the input shaft (2) of the switched transmission, or as a secondary retarder for the output shaft (6) of the switched transmission. An Independent claim for an operating method for a vehicle drive and braking unit is also included.
