Process for achieving elevated cold deformation ability of corrosion-resistant meta-stable austenitic steels during their production comprises using a martensite equivalent (M) of 2. Preferred Features: M for non-stabilized steel is: M = 20 - (% Cr + 1.5(% Ni + % Cu) + 0.75 % Mn + 0.7 % Si + 0.6 % Mo + 1.9 % Ti + 45(% C + % N) + 1.5 % V + 1.1 % W + 0.2 % Co - 0.1 % Al). M for stabilized steel is: M = 20 - (% Cr + 1.5(% Ni + % Cu) + 0.75 % Mn + 0.7 % Si + 0.6 % Mo + 1.1 % W + 0.2 % Co). Determination of the alpha '-martensite proportion at the site of the highest stress is carried out using a magnetic and/or magnet-induced process.
