The backrest (12) is pivoted downward onto the seat (10) about a pivot axis (30), which is identical with the pivot axis (30) of a rear joint arm (16) of a height adjuster for the seat. A locking unit (18) for the backrest is positioned at a set distance to the pivot axis. The unit has a locking element (20) for alternative engagement with a fitting part (24) on the backrest and the frame (26) of the seat. The unit is formed by a spring-loaded locking ratchet.
