Production of a SiO2 blank comprises forming SiO2 particles in a burner flame, and depositing the particles onto the bearing surface of a support rotating about its longitudinal axis under the action of an electrical field. The geometrical shape of the burner flame is changed independent of the position of the burner during movement through the electrical field.
