Process for cleaning the waste gas produced in a vacuum-thermal process comprises feeding the gas through a liquid medium under vacuum before it enters a vacuum pump (16). Dust and condensable materials are removed by the medium. An Independent claim is also included for a device for carrying out the process comprising a wet dust separator (10) filled with liquid medium arranged between an oven chamber (2) and a vacuum pump. Preferred Features: The waste gases are fed under vacuum once below a separating wall (12) into which the liquid medium is immersed. The level of the liquid medium is reduced under the action of a vacuum before the separating wall so that the level on the other side of the wall is increased by a corresponding amount to form a liquid column through which the waste gases are fed. The liquid medium is water, water-containing liquid, oil-containing liquid or synthetic or mineral oil.
