Method for operating a magnetic resonance imaging device in which a positional change in the area to be imaged relative to the imaging volume of the device is detected using orbital navigation echoes. The method has the following characteristics: a reference data set is produced with a number of data points; with the data points as depicted in k-space lying on a partial spherical surface so that the surface is occupied; the partial surface extends over a great circle of a sphere at least by the maximum amount an expected angular displacement of the examination area could take place and; to measure the displacement a data set of an orbital navigation echo is compared with the reference set.
