The calf shell (13) forms an integral part of the support frame (11) and the front shell acts as shinbone shell. The closer (19) reproducibly meters (21) the closing force as function of torque, the meter (21) assisted by a slip coupling. The closer has two parts (17,18) of which part (18) is so fixed on the frame (11) as to sit below and alongside the shinbone rough part when the orthesis is fitted. Closer part (17) on the other hand when fitted lies above and adjacent to the ankle. Each part (17,18) has its own force meter (21) and the frame (11) has a swivel plate as foot so positioned (25) as to convert from passive to active setting in repsonse to a release (31).
