Determination of the oxygen content of interstitial water in formations containing sediment and clay comprises: (a) feeding a protective tube (9) into the formation; (b) feeding a sensor (3) into the tube; and (c) sucking water through an inlet (10) in the protective tube over the sensor. An Independent claim is included for apparatus for determination of the oxygen content of interstitial water in formations comprising a feed tube (4) with a channel (5) containing a sensor and through which the water is sucked by a pump (8).
