Method for monitoring the mechanical state of a motor vehicle with an electrical motor (2) during normal driving, in which a characterizing electrical operating value of the motor is measured and used with a model based analysis (10) to indicate damage to the drive mechanism. The motor voltage or motor rotational velocity can be used as the characterizing value. The method uses statistical methods for damage prediction such as trend functions, or correlation functions. AN Independent claim is included for an arrangement for monitoring the mechanical state of a motor vehicle.
