To lay a roving or sliver (25) in a can (30) for a spinner, the sliver is taken downstream from the calender rollers (27) of a drawing unit through a sliver channel (5) in a rotating plate (10) over the can. The rotating plate and the drawing unit calender rollers are driven at independent speed ratios during selected sliver drawing phases. To lay a roving/sliver in a can, the ratio of the rotating plate speed to the drawing roller speed is higher during the start/stop phases of the drawing unit than when the drawn sliver is delivered at a constant speed. The drawing unit calender rollers and the rotating plate have separate drives. An Independent claim is included for an assembly to lay a roving/sliver in a can, with a rotating plate and sliver channel to take the roving/sliver from a drawing unit to be laid in the can. The rotating plate and the drawing unit rollers rotate with different speed ratios. The calender rollers at the drawing unit have an independent drive.
