The sliver (FB) drawing unit (4), to prepare the sliver for spinning, has an upstream (5) and a downstream (7) pair of rollers. A sensor (2,3,20) monitors the sliver for mass, thickness or density. The sensor signals are passed to a processor (22), which sets the rotary speed of the downstream rollers to be taken off by calender rollers (14). The control sets the rotary speeds of the downstream drawing rollers and the calender rollers at times so that the sliver laying unit (16,17) operates with low dynamics or without rotary speed changes in relation to the drawing and calender rollers.
