2- (4-Trifluoromethoxyphenyl) ethylamine can be produced in an advantageous manner if trifluoromethoxybenzene is converted into halomethyl-1-trifluoromethoxybenzene by halogenomethylation, this compound is converted into 4- (trifluoromethoxyphenyl) acetonitrile by a halogen-cyano exchange finally reduced with hydrogen in the presence of a nickel catalyst. The first stage of this process also represents an advantageous process for the preparation of 4-bromomethyl and 4-chloromethyl-1-trifluoromethoxy-benzene.
