Method for separation and compactness testing of automobile modules using a 3-D sensor such as a camera mounted on a gantry. The camera (7) is directed at surface points between components where a separation should occur and a vector between the design edges of the measurement recording for the left and right sides of the gap (11) determined as a relative measurement. To check the compactness the height difference of the two components is determined. Actual measurements are compared with design measurements (e.g. CAD data) to determine if a module is within tolerance. An Independent claim is made for a measurement device with a mounting gantry and digital controller for positioning the imaging camera for recording 3-D coordinate data.
