Determining the concentration, size and type of particles in a dispersion (3) involves irradiating the surface of the dispersion with light having one or more wavelengths in a region limiting a measuring surface (4); evaluating the intensity of the light reflected from the measuring surface for each wavelength; and determining the concentration, size and type of particles in the dispersion from the intensity of light at different wavelengths. Preferred Features: Measurement of the scattering intensities takes place only on the surface of the dispersion without an optical window. Light in the wavelength region of 180-2000 nm is used.
