The rack (1) and pinion (2) assembly, for a vehicle steering system, has a pressure unit (6) against the rack (1) with at least one support zone (10) which bears on it with a low normal force level. It has at least one further support zone (11) which bears against the rack when the normal force level is increased. The first support surface has a low friction coefficient, against the rack, and the second support surface has a higher friction coefficient. The pressure unit has an elastic distortion through compression or bending of its material
