The system has two battery arrangements (2,3), each with at least one cell (2',3'), in a housing (100) with externally accessible positive and negative terminals (108,102) and a switch (4) for changing the battery between two states. In the first state the first battery arrangement can be charged or used as an energy source and the second can be charged but not discharged. In the second state the second battery arrangement can provide energy. Independent claims are also included for the following: an electrical system for a motor vehicle or other fuel powered device, an electrical starter arrangement for a motor vehicle or other fuel powered device and a method of starting a motor vehicle or other fuel powered device.
