Device comprises a series of fluorescent light tubes arranged above a viewing area to produce strip type light and dark areas as well as a row of CCD cameras arranged between the light tubes to view the areas. A computer is used to control movement of the light source and cameras in three dimensions over vehicle bodywork so that they are held at a constant distance from it. Painting defects are recognized as dark points in light fields or vice versa or deformations in the changeover between dark and light regions.
