Process for determining the content of the combustible byproduct gases of a hydrogen-containing gas stream comprises hydrogen-selective separation and combustion of the combustible byproduct gases with caloric evaluation. An Independent claim is also included for a device for carrying out the above process. Preferred Features: A quantitatively smaller partial stream of the gas stream is used. A metal membrane, membrane pocket module or hollow fiber module with polymer membranes, preferably a metal membrane made of palladium alloy, is used for the hydrogen-selective separation.
