A first signal representing the amount of a first byproduct in the combustion gases and a second signal representing the amount of a second byproduct in these gases are obtained and these signals are combined to determine a total byproduct value used to control the combustion process by altering the temperature of the combustion gases until the total byproduct value has been reduced to a minimum.
