Method has the following steps: recording of a number of 2-D angiographic projection images of the examination area in which the instrument is to be inserted; after the instrument is inserted recording of a number of images with different projections; determination of the spatial coordinates of a selected point in the projection images in an image coordinate system; representation of the selected point within a 3-D reconstruction of the examination area in a common coordinate system on a monitor. An Independent claim is made for a C- frame radiographic system for determining the position of a medical instrument within a patient's body.
