Device comprises a number of light sources (18-36) held in a support. The light sources have various angles of incidence relative to an optical axis (14) of an optical instrument so that an object can be measured or reproduced. To adjust the illumination on various working planes or edges of the object, the light sources are arranged such that their beams have angles of incidence cutting the optical axis over a range of working intervals (48-56). An Independent claim is made for a method for illuminating an object with a number of light sources with varying incidence angles to an optical axis of a measurement or imaging device.
