Inductive measurement method uses magnetic field generating coils (3) and measurement electrodes (2) placed perpendicular to the coils in a measurement pipe (1). An alternating voltage is superimposed on a reference potential applied to the measurement electrodes that are used to measure the mass-flow. Measurement of the electrode impedances relative to the reference potential allows additional information to be gleaned, e.g. changing over of the medium flowing in the pipeline can be detected. An Independent claim is made for an inductive flowmeter in which the impedance of measurement electrodes is measured and used to provide measurements of quantities other than the mass-flow.
