To coat the surface of a cutting tool, it is initially ground with a maximum profile height of = 8 microns m in the lateral profile of the surface recessing up to a maximum profile depth Rm of 1-5 microns m. The substrate surface is coated with a layer of nitride, carbide, carbonitride with oxygen components if required, at least two elements of groups 4,5 and 6 of the periodic table. The coating is in a thickness of 0.5-5.0 microns m.
