Method for free track length measurement in which to determine the length of track without a train on it, a current (I) of a preset frequency is connected to the rails of a track via a contact point (40) from a constant current source (110), the voltage drop (U1) at the contact point is measured by formation of an average measurement value and the quotient of the voltage and current used to determine a reactance value, that is used to determine the train free length.
