The protection system for the occupants of a vehicle, in the event of an impact collision, is a flat carrier plate (1) with a gas generator at the rear side and a covering (5) on the front side with a lower padding layer (6), a center sealing layer (7) and an outer cladding layer (8). The sealing and cladding layers have a number of folds (9), embedded in the padding layer at least at the passage opening (3) through the plate for the gas flow on impact. When the gas generator (2) is triggered, the gas flow through the passages and unfolds the plate covering into an inflated airbag (10). The outer cladding is an embossed plastics skin.
