Impact protection for motor vehicles with non-inflated airbag engaging flat on vehicle component and gas generator system spread over airbag surface

When not inflated, the flat airbag (4,5) engages flat on a vehicle component (2), and a gas generator has a gas generating system spread over the airbag surface. The system has a compressed gas container, or a propellant cord (6) with evenly-distributed propellant. The two layers of the airbag are held together by seams (9) and/or captive straps (10). Some of the seam are formed as tear seams. The airbag is located behind a cover (11) with rated break lines, or behind a soft and/or elastic decorative surface (12).
